Patrik Schick had nine goals in his last seven Bundesliga matches heading into the final weekend, including a hat-trick against RB Leipzig that reminded everyone what a devastating striker he can be. And yet, despite that rich personal form, he knows that Bayer Leverkusen's 2025/26 season has been a deeply disappointing one.

"There have been too many ups and downs," Schick told the Bundesliga website in a candid interview this week. "And unfortunately, we haven't been consistent enough. That has cost us dearly."

The defending champions finished the campaign in sixth place, a result that represents a significant fall from grace after their historic 2024 title-winning season. The Czech striker was particularly frustrated by the number of points dropped from winning positions: "We lost too many games we should have won — including from two goals ahead. That is unacceptable at this level."

On a personal level, Schick acknowledged that an October thigh injury disrupted his early-season momentum, but praised his physical condition as he hit his stride in the new year. His contract extension at the club is a reflection of his commitment to the project: "Last year was a special experience — winning the Bundesliga and the DFB Cup together. I want to be part of building something like that again."

Away from club football, Schick is buzzing about the summer ahead. Czechia have qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico — their first appearance at the tournament since 2006. For Schick, who was ten years old during that World Cup, it carries profound personal significance.

"I was just a kid watching that tournament," he said, his eyes lighting up. "And now I get to be part of it. It is a huge experience for all of us — the players, the fans, the whole country. We cannot wait."
